You Make My Day Award

The Muppets bring back warm remembrances–especially of my grandfather. My grandfather didn’t have much of a childhood. Eventually he ran away from home because he didn’t think much of his new stepfather who wasn’t very nice to him. He found employment in a sawmill and over the years by working hard and taking courses at night, he worked his way up to becoming a lumber inspector covering I think, most if not all of the Canadian Provinces and some of the Southern States as well. He spent most of his life on the road, eating in restaurants, sleeping in motels, taking in the odd opera or symphony here and there… Just prior to his retirement, my grandfather met my grandmother and married her five years before I was born. My grandfather was always very good to me. When we visited, he took me and his dog for long walks and taught me all about trees. He built a house for my toy dog out of plywood and covered it with a vinyl covering. He delighted in bringing out wind-up toys–cars and animals, and we played with them for what seemed like hours. He made cute little baskets with handles by carving out walnut shells–purses for my dolls. We read stories, played dominoes and checkers, but of all the things that we did together, grandpa’s favorite thing to do was watching cartoons on television–Popeye, Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, Tom and Jerry, to name a few. When the Muppets aired on television, I never saw my grandfather look happier. He became alive. He bacame a child again. My grandmother, my mother and me all agreed that watching my grandfather watch the Muppets was more enjoyable than watching the Muppets themselves.

1) Why do you blog?
Answer: I started out with a Music Myspace page to post some of my original songs. It was there that I discovered blogs. I began posting my poetry there and gosh was is ever awful, but I kept persisting. I posted there for four years. When the new Myspace came in there were many problems–then, I discovered WordPress. 🙂

2) If you were trapped on a desert island, what book, DVD, food, cartoon character, and childhood game would you bring?

I would bring one of Syd Field’s books or William C. Martell’s books about screenwriting, lots of blank journals and a box of pens. Oops…I’m not answering the question properly. Okay…The Bible and some Zen poetry.

DVD: Either Richard Thompson–live from austin, Culture Club 20th Anniversary Concert or Sting–all this time

Food: dried pasta (although my first thought was a lemon meringue pie)

Cartoon Character: I wouldn’t have yet gone mad! Okay…Scooby Doo.

Childhood Game: a deck of playing cards–one has to be practical!

3) Share a funny joke or one-liner.

I’ll have to think on that one–will post later.

4) What is your favourite thing about your self?

I’m comfortable in my own skin.

5) What one word best describes you?

Hardworking and persistent – oops, that’s two.

6) If you could have a lifetime supply of any candy/candy bar, what would it be?

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups or Kit Kats
